jailcd2017055: Gegerkalong Traditional Market in a Dense and Modern Urban Environment

Abstract

Market is one of the most important element of the city with dense population. Beside the issue of booming of modern market that cornered the existence of traditional market, a situation emerged that the modern society still depends on the function of traditional market. There are many types of market in Bandung. These markets are managed by the government through the market management of Bandung city. One of them is Gegerkalong market, this market has become main economical center in Gegerkalong district thus resulting to the outnumbered traders who can no longer be afforded in the market’s space area. These traders flooded the street in the morning and creating a traffic jam in Gegerkalong street. This paper aims to observe and evaluate the current condition of Gegerkalong market, how it is managed and the fulfillment of the standard of traditional market system and further gives us a picture about how a traditional market survive in the middle of modern society. The process of gathering data in this paper will be from literature reviews and direct observation of the market, the standards and definition of traditional market with the observation will provide a real and objective condition.
