An example of Dongsha Wo Village,a traditional village in Datong City, Shanxi Province,China, is given in this paper. First of all, through the field investigation and analysis of the village, from settlement and site selection, spatial layout design, residential characteristics and other aspects, the paper analyzes the unique residential forms in this area, the low-carbon strategies that can be used for reference in the original building, and the existing energy consumption problem. Furthermore,on the premise of not destroying the characteristics of traditional residential buildings, we will further explore low-carbon design methods which are suitable for local dwellings from the aspects of building climate adaptability, building ventilation and lighting, building structure, renewable energy utilization, heating measures, etc. In this way, the sustainable development of traditional rural houses in Shanxi can be realized. What’s more, this paper provides new ideas for the current low-carbon architectural design research and related construction departments of residential houses in other regions, and it explores new forms of residential houses that integrate regional characteristics and low-carbon Thought and future development directions.
