Abstract

In the early 21st century, by combine fields of computational geometry based on mathematical and computer programming has introduced intriguing approaches of computational design (CD). Terzidis (2008) refers to this renewed interest as the shift from computerization to computation. According to Terzidis computerization is the act of “entities or processes that are already conceptualized in the designer’s mind is entered, manipulated, or stored on a computer system.” In contrast, computation or computing, shapes aren’t manipulated by the designer but generated by the computer. Designers and researchers used various terminologies to show these approaches. But some terms are used ambiguously and inconsistently, and various terms are usually applied to represent the same concept. This paper reviews CD and taxonomy for a set of key CD terms, namely, parametric, generative, and algorithmic design, based on a paper study from which different definitions by numerous authors were collected and compared.
