Abstract

A crossing bridge guarantees pedestrians' safety and security when they cross a busy street. Most of the users thought that using the crossing bridge would delay although crossing through the bridge takes a shorter time than crossing on the street. This study examines the spatial characteristics' contribution to the behavioral deviations that occur in the crossing bridge and its surroundings that make users reluctant to cross the street using the crossing bridge. The research employed a qualitative method, in which data was gathered using direct observation and interviews with users. The results reveal deviations taking place on the crossing bridge as indicated by the presence of garbage, rust railing, bent stair nosing, the stench of urine, as well as the existence of the homeless people and hawkers in the afternoon and evening. This deviances occurs due to the low level of spatial invisibility that contributes to the lack of surveillance. Moreover, the infrastructure was not well maintained and this eliminates the sense of belonging and territoriality. It also affects some potentials of pickpocketing and other crime to most likely occur. This study concludes that the architectural characteristics of the crossing bridge plays a vital role in accommodating deviant behaviors.
