Since the reform and development, China has experienced rapid urbanization. The urban development basically follows the principle of abandoning the old city environment and expanding the new urban area to the periphery, which is also known as the "spreading cake" type of development. This development method has caused the old city to face difficulties that do not match the urban modern development needs, such as functional decline, poor environmental quality and reduced spatial vitality. Therefore, how to improve the quality of life of the residents living in the old city and renew the new vitality of the old city has become an urgent problem to be solved. At present, for the sustainable renewal and development of the old city, the general way of borrowing from the academic circle is the "small-scale gradual, organic growth, bottom-up" update mode. Meanwhile, this approach fully takes into account the rights of residents' cities - residents control space and social production, and participate in the use and manufacture of urban space. Taking Tianzifang District of Shang Hai as the breakthrough point, this paper reviews the course of urban renewal of Tianzifang area and discusses the influence of ownership structure on the process of "bottom -up" city renewal. What's more, from Henri Lefebvre's "the right to city", this paper explores the possibility of increasing public discussion, negotiation and participation through visual and technical language in urban planning, architectural practice, and so on. Finally, this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the city's bottom-up update model, and discusses the implications of this model for China's urban renewal process.
