Abstract

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a large number of factories were planned and built, and after the reform and opening up, they experienced a period of prosperity. However, with the historical reasons such as the adjustment and upgrading of the urban industrial structure, many factories were closed or moved out of the city, leaving many old industrial areas, and their affiliated communities began to shrink. In recent years, the development model of Chinese cities has gradually changed from "incremental" expansion to "stock” optimization. Increasingly theoretical and practical research on the renovation of old industrial areas and old residential areas and optimization of public space is one of the most important aspects. The scientific evaluation of these public spaces is the basis for proposing an optimization strategy. Xi'an Textile Town was built in the 1950s. Since the late 1990s, many enterprises in the Textile Town have closed down. It has changed from Xi'an "Little Hong Kong" in the 1980s to one of the poorest areas in Xi'an. Improving their living condition and public spaces has become an urgent issue. The Simian community in the Textile Town of Xi'an was selected as the research area and various public spaces in the community were sorted out. Jan Gahl's Public Space & Public Life Survey is used to investigate typical public spaces and activities taking place there. According to the survey results, this study further summarizes the problems existing in the public space of the Simian community and proposes corresponding solutions. It is expected to provide reference methods and content for similar old city regeneration.
