Abstract

Cave dwelling is a kind of traditional Chinese residence with great cultural and architectural value. It has many advantages that modern architecture does not have in many ways, such as sustainability and ecology. Under the influence of urbanization process, the situation of cave dwellings in Northern Shaanxi have also changed greatly. People who originally lived in cave dwellings gradually left the cave dwellings where they had lived for generations and moved to cities or built houses in "the form of cities" near the original settlements. It is true that Cave dwellings are more and more difficult to adapt to the needs of modern life in many aspects, such as the incomplete use of building functions and the inconvenient of use. But the buildings they built in "the form of cities" hurt the traditional culture and the overall style of the village, and also failed to make the residents really enjoy the comfort of modern life. Taking Nanniwan CR Hope Village as an example, this paper introduces the form, characteristics and functions of cave dwelling yards in Northern Shaanxi. What's more this paper puts forward the design strategy of cave dwelling renovation and introduces how the strategy is applied in Nanniwan CR Hope Village. The renovation design improves the comfort of residents, the sustainability and energy conservation of cave buildings, and provides an example for transforming traditional buildings and carrying forward the spiritual culture of traditional buildings.
