Abstract

There are a large number of low-quality teaching buildings built in the 1990s and 2000s in China. With the improvement of people's living standards, the requirements for indoor environmental performance of buildings also increase. Therefore, how to improve the indoor environment and satisfaction of existing teaching buildings is of great importance. A retrofitted building and an old building in hot summer and cold winter area of China were selected, and indoor environment and satisfaction survey were conducted in the transition season. The results indicated that the retrofitted building provided a more stable thermal environment, however, the light environment and acoustic environment in old building were better than the retrofitted building. CO2 concentrations in two buildings were below 1000 ppm. PM2.5 concentrations in two buildings were below 75 µg/m3 in most of the time. Although the hardware facilities were upgraded in retrofitted building, the old building performed better in satisfactions with thermal environment, air quality, acoustic environment, overall environment and learning efficiency. Natural ventilation mode significantly improved the satisfaction with thermal environment and air quality. We should not only focus on the hardware facilities, but also pay more attention on the use mode.
