Abstract

The wind environment around buildings is consequently concerned by government agencies, developersarchitects, landscape architects, building services engineers and other professionals at different levels. So agreat mass of achievements have been gained in the research field of indoor wind enyironment inarchitectural physics. However, these achievements cannot serve architects directly in their work of practicadesign stages. Mostly, simulation softwares of wind environment based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) are applied to layout of general plans of large scale, which fast simulate conceptual design andprovide data for project assessment and optimizing measures. Along with the advancements of computertechnologies, CF may have the potential to be an alternative that is less time-consuming and more cost.effective compared with the traditional wind tunnel testing. Scholarly debates over the complexity of outdooiWwind enyironment continue among architectural physicists. This paper focused on actual measurement oloutdoor wind environment within 3 high-rise residential communities. The fieldwork in this research wasdivided into two parts: building layout and wind environment. The former part included building height andbuilding interval; and the latter included wind speed and direction inside and outside the communities andsatisfaction investigation of wind environment. Therefore, the wind speed ratio was introduced, and theimpact on wind environment by building layout could be compared. By comparison between the values oiwind speed and direction recorded on different points during the same period, and those simulated insoftwares, the commplexity of outdoor wind environment was revealed as well as the insufliciency in fast wincenvironment simulation. The purpose was to give a clear demonstration to the complex features of outdoorwind environment, at the same time, to find out the deficiency of common wind environment simulation andsuggest improvements. After comparison and analysis, outdoor wind speed in residential area was mainlaffected by building layout. On the whole, although boundary condition settings in simulation simplify actuacondition, the simulation results are still credible. While the applicability of CFD softwares in the stage ofgeneral concept, especially in assessment of building layout, was affrmed. In the tide of urbanization inChina, a large amount of urban planning and architectural designing projects are underway without guidanceby valid environmental evaluation instrument. There is notable difference between temperature distributionin software simulation and that in actual measurement, In actual condition, site temperature is primaritaffected by solar radiation and secondly by transpiration. Therefore, some designers and projectors directlytake advantage of wind environment simulation softwares in conceptual planning stage, to optimize buildinglayout.
