Abstract

Sustainable city development is a response to economic, environmental, and social changes. But, over time, those three pillars are not able to reflect the complexity of contemporary society. Therefore, culture is also considered to be one of the pillars of sustainable development. In sustainable city development, process and policy is not the same in every city. It all depends on the cities. In achieving a sustainable city, a sustainable society and culture becomes one of the most important things that must be maintained by that community. Without a sustainable society there can be no sustainable city. To achieve the status of a sustainable city, Bandung will require sustainable public awareness of its culture. The society of Bandung must maintain and preserve their culture, in this case the Sundanese culture, to guard the existence of Sundanese culture today and tomorrow. This is also needed to preserve the Sundanese culture as a legacy for the next generation. Angklung is one of the Sundanese cultural heritages that has the potential to engage people. Angklung has been recognized as a World Intangible Heritage on November 16, 2010 by UNESCO. By preserving the Angklung, we can achieve cultural sustainability. Cultural sustainability can be achieved because culture is communal, and the Angklung itself can engage people. Through this kind of public art, angklung tries to engage the people for the creation of cultural identity and sense of place. People are needed to achieve a sustainable society, and a sustainable society is urgently needed to achieve a sustainable city. Therefore, by preserving angklung, we will continue to learn how to make angklung, how to play angklung, how to manage angklung performances, and how to develop the tourism potential of angklung that involves people and can be related to the aspects of sustainability, such as social, economic, environmental, and finally the culture itself.
