Abstract

There are a substantial number of rural residences in China, and their energy consumption account for about 26% in all buildings. The traditional dwellings are the classical type of rural residence. Taking the Sizhai traditional village as the research object, use the function of orientation measurement in Google Earth, and method of frequency statistics to research the building azimuth distribution feature for each subdomain of Sizhai village. The result of statistics show that the type of rural residence for subdomain mainly has three, that  is,  main  unidirectional  subdomain,  main  bidirectional  subdomain  and  multidirectional  subdomain. Through observations and measurements of BA (Building Azimuth) for the all dwellings in Sizhai village, the amount and frequency of BAs within the best 3 BA intervals of S, S-E20 and S-E40 are 7 and 2%, 66 and 15%, 64 and 15%, respectively. Those within the worst 3 BA intervals of S-W80,N-W80 and N-W60 are just 3 and 1%, 17 and 4%, 7 and 2%, respectively. The finding of this research may provide some suggestion on selection of building orientation for new-build rural residence and give a method for existing residences to assess their energy saving potential in terms of BA.
