Cave dwelling in northern Shaanxi is one of the most primitive living forms in China. Not only has a long history, as a kind of traditional Chinese building, whether at the cultural level or the architectural level, it has very important value. Cave dwellings have many advantages that modern architecture does not have in many ways, such as sustainability and ecology. And the cave in northern Shaanxi is one of the most representative, full of vernacular and local characteristics.
Taking Mafang village with typical northern Shaanxi cave dwellings as an example, this paper introduces the formation reasons, development, classification and theirrespective characteristics of the northern Shaanxi cave dwellings. The characteristics of cave dwelling courtyard in northern Shaanxi have been deeply analyzed. The decorative art of cave dwellings has been deeply discussed.
