Abstract

The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of neighborhood environment on means of transportation used by the late elderly in the suburbs. To achieve the purpose,a questionnaire survey was conducted targeting the late elderly. We categorized means of transportation; Group-1 were walk and bicycle, Group-2 were others and conducted independence test. Followings are the major conclusions:
1. Group-1 had the smaller difference in elevation of the commercial building and their houses than Group-2.
2. The roads in the area were associated with means of transportation. It is highly likely that travel on foot or on a bicycle if the samples think the roads are wide and the roads have gradual slopes.
3. Social capital was associated with means of transportation. Group-1 did volunteer work more times than Group-2 and social capital of Group-1 was higher than that of Group-2.
