Abstract

Compared with the increasingly clear gardens history in Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the research on the  Chinese  traditional  gardens  design  theory  has many missing  links  in  Song  dynasty,  even  the  historical remains  are poorly  deficient  in  this period. The  Moon Rockery, located  in Hangzhou  Fenghuang  Hill, has long been recognized as one of the most important royal garden relics in Southern Song Dynasty and famous for  its  magic  moon light on Mid-autumn Day. On the  basis of  field surveying and  mapping, the author collects  the  related  records  in  ancient poems,   sketchbook,  local  document,  drawing  material   and  so  on, analyzes  the  site  location,  historical  evolution,  landscape  arrangement  and  ingenuity  of the  moon  rockery, and fills in firsthand information for further landscape research in Song dynasty.
