jailcd2019-084: The Loss of Character in Bandung Square Which Causes Changes in Form and Function

Abstract

A city square is a place for various kind of activities, because it functions as a center of the city where most parts of urban activities take place. This study aims to describe the evolution in the character of the city square in Bandung, which causes changes in its form and function. The research method used in this study is a literature review. the author founds several changes in the character of the city square, of which previously was the embodiment and a mark of historical proof to the establishment of Bandung city. The current state of Bandung’s city square no longer acts as the central ground for government and socio-culture for the citizens of Bandung, it now only serves as a courtyard for the Great Mosque of Bandung. The Absence of banyan trees that hereditarily has a strong philosophical value, indicates an alteration of characters in the square, which makes the current state no longer resemble its former state in the colonial era. This shows a deterioration in the identity of Bandung city that ultimately changes its form and function.
