jailcd2019-097: The Collective Zones Renovation Project in Hanoi

Abstract

The collective zones were new models of an architecture created in the North of Vietnam in the early 1960s, large-scale residential areas and called collective zones. The collective zones play an important role in providing accommodation for the North in general and in Hanoi in particular at that time. However, the collective zones have a low-living condition and only meet the minimum needs of people. The accommodation is quite narrow, only sleep- ing and eating is private and the other activities such as cooking, taking a bath, people share each other. For many people, the old collective zones seem to be blurry in the modern captital but for others, they are like memories of childhood that still remained inside the high-developed of the urban. Nowadays, population density, architectural form, infrastructure and function spaces have been changed due to the demand of the residents.There are a lot of research projects on collective zones but most of them have been demolished and rebuilt more and more modern. Therefore, with the research, we have some solutions to deal with the existing problems by creating new living spaces for residents that meet the demands of all people without demolishing old construction. We choose Nguyen Cong Tru collective zones as a research site, one of the first collective zones built in Hanoi and has exist for 60 years.
