Abstract

Due to environmental concerns and the high cost of energy in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in improving energy efficiency and constructing green buildings. At the meanwhile, building envelope features considerably affect the energy efficiency of buildings, indoor environmental quality and the thermal comfort for human. Thus, the effective performance of building envelopes is crucial in the reduction of energy consumption. This article strives to make an exhaustive technical review of the building envelope system from performance  and  intelligent  construction  perspectives.  Advances  in  smart  skin  including  environmental adaptive materials and systems are presented in this paper. Furthermore, different types of integrated design approaches such as multi-objective comprehensive performance optimization strategies and integrated energy collecting systems (including photovoltaic, photothermal, etc.) are classified to highlight the potential of comprehensive performance in inspection of building envelopes for providing energy efficient solutions. Then, various types of smart construction method based on digital fabrication following the aspect of manufacturing method and secondary development are discussed. Finally, new installation and maintenance approach of building envelopes including on-site aided installation system, on-site remote sensing positioning system are presented as they also play an important role in the life-circle period of a building.
