Abstract

With the advent of the "Fourth Industrial Revolution", the traditional concept of design has graduallyfailed to fully meet the demand of development of enterprises and society. The skills, principles and practices of design are now widely used across the economy, from banking to retail. Designers, too, have always drawn on a range of different skills, tools and technologies to deliver new ideas, goods and services. This is what makes design unique, and is how it makes products, services and systems more useful, usable and desirable in advanced economies around the world.
In this research, data are collected from the UK, US and Hong Kong; all of them pay high regard to design with Hong Kong environmental background similar to Taiwan. These data reflect the relations between design skills and economic fruits, highlighting the impact of the design industry on the national economy. It further proves that design skills and design management have an absolutely substantial contribution to the productivity and innovation of the national economy. But it also provides a stark warning about the potential adverse impact of Taiwan's long-term poor cultivation of design quality and related industries' under-investment in these skills on the competitiveness of the country. Taiwan needs to better prepare herself for the economic, technological and political changes ahead.
