Abstract

Old buildings are the unique urban memory of every city. But when a city has to develop, these buildings face the problem of either being demolished and then rebuilt with new buildings or renovated. This is especially the case with older buildings of the residential type. In China, for example, these old residential buildings often have low floor area ratios, dilapidated infrastructure, and are in a state of disrepair, among many other problems. But often these old residential buildings reflect the unique character of each city. The different living habits and folk customs of each city are reflected in these old buildings. These spaces and structures with cultural attributes should be preserved so that the old and the new can be integrated into the architecture. The architecture of residential buildings in southwest China reflects the lifestyle of the people of the time, the local characteristics, the regional features, and the style of the times. Based on this, this paper takes the architectural renovation design of a residential house in southwest China as an example to explore the ways to better integrate the old and the new in the renovation, in the hope of promoting the positive development of the renovation of traditional residential houses.
