Abstract

Walking space is one of the most basic modes of human transportation. The condition of comfort when walking is strongly influenced by the walking environment. The walking environment consists of elements such as spatial planning features, walking ability, environmental feasibility, traffic safety, pedestrian facilities, and environmental quality. Various ways to deal with environmental problems work to create sustainable urban planning and development. Description of pedestrian interaction in various human spaces provides a useful additional to evaluating the quality of environmental design of pedestrian buildings and road space. Kokurakita is a ward in the city of Kitakyushu, Japan. As an administrative service and the largest commercial and shopping area in Kitakyushu, it is clustered around Kokura Station. This research focused on walking experiences in Kokurakita using questionnaire, and site survey. Data analysis using variables from environmental conditions for pedestrians is proven to be able to identify what factors make pedestrians comfortable using it. The responses and all the data show how walking environment influences the pedestrian.
