Abstract

Pit cave-dwelling is a type of traditional residential building, which is called by experts as "building miracle" of Chinese residential building. They are square pits dug down by local residents and then caves dug into the four walls to form underground quadrangle courtyards with four walls closed. As a unique vernacular dwelling in loess plateau, Pit Cave-dwelling used to be widely distributed in Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Henan, and other provinces and regions. It has the advantages of warm winter and cool summer and low construction cost.
Based on the study of pit cave-dwellings, this paper takes Baishe Village, Shaanxi Province as the research object. First of all, this article gives a brief introduction to the pit kiln. Second, the characteristics of Baishe Village and pit cave-dwellings in village were sorted out and summarized. Thirdly, it sums up the wisdom of the pit cave-dwellings in Baishe Village.
Through the analysis and research of pit cave-dwelling, the author hopes to alleviate people's one-sided understanding and blind demolition of raw soil architecture pit cave-dwelling to a certain extent, so that people can understand the wisdom of Chinese rural architecture and provide new ideas for contemporary architectural design.
