jailcd2024020: Transformation of Residential Space in Creative Community: A Case Study of Loang Him Kao, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Abstract

The development of creative districts under Thailand’s Creative Economy Policy by connecting the stories of the communities, people and local businesses has enabled several creative communities to develop to enhance their quality of life, through cultural and local wisdom including handicraft, music, preforming arts, and visual arts. The goal is to support local businesses from the community development. To attract tourists and those interested in culture and local wisdom to visit the communities, residential areas transformed to
commercial space including public space and open space that used to be gathering place for community activities in their community. This paper presents the transformation of residential space and public space in Loang Him Kao community to commercial space, by studied the traditional Lanna houses in Loang Him Kao community which is a creative community in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After that, the data was analyzed to discover the identity of the community and determine design guidelines for local houses, public spaces, and
open spaces for future community expansion. This aims to ensure sustainable community including natural, economy, society, and culture.
