Abstract

Yard has always been the most distinguishable and fundamental feature of Chinese architecture, though the specific forms usually evolves with the social and political changes. In recent upgrade of the National Beautiful Countryside Construction Progress in 13th five-year Plan of China, the objective of construction activities for new rural appearance in Zhejiang province are required to include habitability and vernacular features has been attached the top priority and therefore the installation of yard has been being revived.
Through in-depth field investigation and mapping of about 200 dwellings in 20 villages in Quzhou City, and afterwards analysis on the layouts and space relationships of local traditional and modern residences, this paper explains the change process of the characteristics of the local yard construction and the reasons behind it. The results can also be reference to practical design methods of rural vernacular buildings.
