Abstract

The historic district of the Cangqiao is one of the most famous historic districts in China, and the traditional “Taimen” building which is gradually disappeared is the focus of protection in recent years. In order to save historical culture and find the intelligence of ancient building, the several research methods should be utilized, such as field investigation, sampling, data analysis and so on. The function between the foyer and the street or lanes would be explained. The investigation shows that the foyer has many functionswhich decorate traditional district by traditional color improve the microclimate and decrease sound volume by the foyer, etc. In the end, the investigation summarizes the shortcomings of the foyer in the historic district and puts forward some suggestions for modification, which will provide references for the construction of other historic districts in the future.
