Abstract

Kampung kota (urban village) is one of the Indonesian big cities’ unique features. The village is ironically resided by the city’s native residents who are marginalized. The city’s rapid modernization and development have resulted in the less and fewer lands provided for low-income residential areas and public spaces. The urban villagers were born in the area. They have inhabited and earned their living in there throughout their lives. In many cases, urban villages are preserved as part of the city history by the city government. Given the high density of the settlement, a public space is barely prioritized to be developed to facilitate social activities and interactions. As many studies have shown, a public space is an important facility that should be provided to maintain a healthy living of a good city because it is historically and culturally inherent with the Indonesian communities’ characters. This article aims to propose a design of a public facility in the limited space of Kampung Cibunut, an urban village in the city of Bandung (Indonesia). The design process consists of a small research, which employed a qualitative method, to allow us to identify the cultural and social potentialities owned by the village and to map the physical characteristics and the existing conditions of the village, and a preliminary design that infills the new design into the existing facility.
