Abstract

Urban parks serve ecological, disaster - mitigation, and recreational functions. In the context of population aging and lifestyle changes, neighborhood and block parks contribute to the physical and mental well-being of the population. This study evaluates the layout of these parks in Kitakyushu, Japan, by utilizing geographic information system and space syntax. Residential units are defined by elementary school catchments. Axial maps are generated from road networks for integration analysis. Parks are classified according to land use, building characteristics, and road patterns. A detailed review is conducted on twelve representative neighborhood parks with an area of approximately 2 hectares. Neighborhood parks are concentrated in high- accessibility areas. Block parks adjacent to commercial areas and schools exhibit strong connectivity. Despite the presence of housing, coastal industrial zones lack block parks due to land constraints. Parks in the city center adhere closely to the neighborhood unit principles. Suburban areas are characterized by scattered small parks and gaps in coverage. GIS and space syntax are employed to uncover network structures. The results advocate for land - use - sensitive planning to address disparities.
