Recently, reduction of green spaces is considered as a factor responsible for the urban heat island phenomenon.
Additionally, an administration establishes various greening systems albeit without strengthening the urban
environment.
In this study, we investigate overseas advanced cases with respect to the new concept of cities that are termed as
green infrastructure and consider the current situation and problems in conjunction with international trends. We
also examine case studies of cities promoting greening in the country and examined issues. Based on the same, we
suggest proposals for future green infrastructure in Japan and performed evaluations.
Several reports confirmed an increase in cost-effectiveness following the introduction of green infrastructure as
reported by cases in foreign countries. World-wide trends indicate that green infrastructure strengthens urban
environmental aspect, and each local government determines a movement to actively adopt green infrastructure.
Moreover, the incorporation of green infrastructure into the urban strategy of Japan potentially strengthens the
function of the environment of a city, and a quantitative evaluation should be performed with respect to the
practical application of Japanese green infrastructure in the future.
