Accompany with economic globalization, the modernization and industrialization, urbanization are the
inevitable results of the most cities in the world. However, with the urbanization process, we are now facing
with the living environment problems as urban heat island, air pollution, water pollution, and energy shortage.
As the capital of China, the scale of urbanization in Beijing is without precedent in human history especially
after the application of the Reform and Open Policy since 1978. It is necessary and meaningful to have a
comprehensive investigation of the urbanization situation in Beijing and its surrounding cities from every
aspect. In this study, we used Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 series images to study on urban land use and land
cover and the urban heat island effect in 4 cities in Jing-jin-ji region. It is worth to mention that the results
had shown that the urban heat island effect is closely related to the urban development level.
