Abstract

The inadequately planned configuration of urban spatial organization has resulted in a substantial presence of underutilized or inefficiently utilized disjointed areas within the city. This study presents an overview of the fundamental definition and essence of "urban residual spaces" while categorizing the different forms in which they manifest. The functionalities of these "urban residual spaces" and the favorable impacts associated with their design and utilization on urban development are explicated from two perspectives: employed and unutilized. By establishing connections between the originally fragmented urban "residual spaces" and transforming them into novel spaces that incorporate aesthetic, recreational, and fitness elements, the provision of physical and psychological rejuvenation is facilitated. Furthermore, the considerations and design principles for developing urban residual spaces are summarized, thereby generating fresh insights for optimizing urban spatial organization and fostering the harmonized advancement of society.
