Abstract

With the reduction of fossil fuel energy storage and the increase of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, the development of renewable energy is imperative. However, due to its variable characteristics, renewable energy will affect the balance of power supply and demand in the grid. Japan's current priority nuclear power operation strategy affects the penetration of renewable energy. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of nuclear power on the grid based on EnergyPLAN energy planning software, which is reflected in the penetration of renewable energy and the compression of thermal power generation. At the same time, this paper combines pumped storage and analyzes its interaction. The public power grid of Kyushu, Japan was selected as the study area. The results showed that nuclear power generation in Kyushu accounted for 25% of the total power generation. It can provide constant power output to the grid; however, it reduces the penetration rate of renewable energy at the same time. The addition of pumped storage can increase the penetration rate of renewable energy by up to 70%. This study provides researchers with reference value for future public grid power generation strategies.
