Abstract

With the continuous improvement of aged gated communities in China, the street system in gated community has gradually become the focus of the movement. Due to the complexity of internal street network within aged gated communities, this study analyzes different types of the street network by using Space Syntax analysis. By comparing different characteristics of the street network and potential spatial use features, there are three important findings: 1) the street networks within aged gated communities of Qingdao can be divided into six categories, among which the ‘composite’ and ‘tree’ types account for the most; 2) because of the hilly topography, height differences and poor continuity of streets, aged gated communities contains more ‘cul-de-sacs’ type of street compared with the cities that are located on plain area; 3) influenced by the urban construction of Germany and Japan, Qingdao has more western-like open street neighborhood and Liyuan in the German-occupied area, which have produced a unique ‘broken’ type of street network in the continuous urban development of Qingdao. The results of this study can provide more data and theoretical support for the modification of aged gated communities and inspire more research to propose better design methods or strategies for the movement.
