Abstract

Since the end of the 20th century, with the accelerated urbanization process, a series of problems such as excessive urban population concentration, resource tension, urban heat island effect, and traffic congestion have emerged one after another. Timely monitoring the dynamic changes of urban development and studying the driving factors of urban expansion are of great significance for grasping the urban development process, rational land use, urban system planning and decision-making. A systematic study of urban expansion is an important foundation for preventing blind urban expansion and promoting smart urban growth. In this paper, the 458 most relevant papers in the Web of Science core collection were selected based on the search term "Urban expansion". The analysis was conducted with the help of CiteSpace information visualization software. Since the end of the 20th century, with the accelerated urbanisation process, a series of problems such as over-concentration of urban population, resource constraints, urban heat island effect and traffic congestion have emerged one after another. Timely monitoring of the dynamic changes in urban development and studying the drivers of urban expansion are of great significance in grasping the process of urban development, rationalising land use, and carrying out urban system planning and decision-making. A systematic study of urban expansion is an important basis for preventing blind urban expansion and promoting intelligent urban development. In this paper, 458 most relevant papers were selected from the Web of Science core library using "urban sprawl" as the search term. The analysis was carried out with the help of CiteSpace information visualisation software. The final results show that researchers are paying increasing attention to the field of urban sprawl and that the level of research has transitioned from a superficial phenomenological analysis to a forward-looking study of future urban development. However, there is less collaboration between the various research institutions and less sharing of results, which may affect the development and further discussion of the field of urban sprawl.
