Abstract

In the current context of slow-paced urban stock renewal, whether the architectural culture can be inherited sustainably affects whether the urban development state is gradual or abrupt. This paper defines the dynamic coupling of natural objective attributes and humanistic subjective attributes of buildings as the sustainable state of architectural culture. Taking the renewal and restoration of a traditional dwelling building in Zhentou Village in the center of Ji'an County as the research object, the dynamic coupling is subdivided into the coupling of “architectural space as well as its sequence and the owner’s demand for new functional use”, “architectural construction as well as decoration techniques and the owner's demand for memory reminiscence”, “architectural Daylighting environment and the owner’s demand for comfort”. Then, from the comparative perspective of the two design strategies, that is, restoring the past to making it new with the past, the dynamic changes of the three pairs of coupling and their rationality are analyzed and summarized by field observation, interview, and software simulation methods. It finally argues that the dynamic changes of coupling are the essence of cultural sustainability, and accordingly provides strategies applicable to other urban regeneration projects.
