jismart20190035: A Study on Steven Holl’s Architectural Design Works From 1975 until Present

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain knowledge on the design expression of Steven Holl. In this study, the buildings designed by Steven Holl are analyzed for works planned from 1975 to the present. Many of Steven Holl's works have unique forms inspired by climate, culture, and art and many other features. Steven Holl is also very interested in design methods and often mentions his thoughts and concepts, which gives him an insight into the overall architectural from. There have been many studies undertaken on the design methods of Steven Holl's approach to his design works, but few has been discussed from the viewpoint of all his architectural works from 1975 to the present, focusing on four classifications according to facility use, construction state, region and building size. We have classified the projects by facility use into 11 types, by construction state into 3 types, by region into 5 types and by building size into 5 types. In this study, the design expression of all projects will be analyzed of residential projects (including independent housing and housing complexes), cultural facilities, educational facilities, complex facilities, landscapes, urban planning, commercial facilities, interior projects, medical facilities, offices and religious facilities.
