Abstract

Courtyards are the core of the layout to traditional dwellings. Previous studies have focused on the combination of courtyards, and less on the spatial form of the courtyard itself. This paper takes 53 traditional dwellings in Zhejiang Province on the southeast coast China as the research object, and compares and analyzes the relationship between three different typical terrain conditions such as plains, hills and low mountains in coastal provinces and the spatial form, courtyard mode, scale, face width and depth,of residential courtyards. Through statistical analysis, it is found that dwellings in low mountain areas with large topographic relief have larger courtyards, while dwellings in flat plains have compact courtyards with small width and large depth. This phenomenon is closely related to the industrial form and land use in the history of each region. The analysis results provide a research basis for the further protection, development and research of traditional rural dwellings and settlements.
