Keywords:
prefabricated buildings, carbon emissions, energy efficiencyAbstract
With the rapid development of economic and urbanization, building sector produces a huge amount of carbon emissions which intensifies greenhouse-gas effects. Prefabricated buildings (PBs) are partially or wholly manufactured in factories and then transported to construction sites for assembly. The promotion of PBs has become a focus to solve the problems of energy consumption and environmental pollution. As China aims to push its pillar sector of the country's economy- construction industry onto a greener path in its 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), the proportion of PBs in new buildings has reached 25% in 2022 in China. However, a more comprehensive analysis of PBs is needed considering in economic, environmental and society aspects. This paper provides an overview of available literature on benefits, limitations and challenges of prefabricated building systems which can serve as a reference for the adoption of PBs in China.
