Railway passenger stations serve as vital gateways to urban spaces. With the rise in economic levels and rapid technological advancements, these stations have undergone significant iterations. The fourth-generation railway passenger stations now not only fulfill essential transportation functions but also enhance spatial utilization, significantly promoting station-city integration. In modern urban settings, gateway spaces are no longer merely traditional "entrances" but rather complex urban structures composed of interconnected spaces. In this study, Qingdao Station, located in the historic South District, is selected as the research subject. Against the backdrop of continuous updates in China's territorial spatial planning models, this research employs multi-source data analysis to examine the current state of Qingdao Station from the perspective of station-city relations. The focus is on identifying spatial issues within the station area and exploring pathways for developing a new type of urban gateway. By integrating relevant research findings from both domestic and international studies, along with urban planning policies, this research is guided by theories of station-city integration and sustainable development. It aims to analyze the future development trends of central urban railway stations from the perspectives of transportation, functionality, and cultural context.
