jismart2024030: Smart Materials and Adaptive Facades: Enabling Climate-Resilient Buildings
Keywords:
Smart materials, Adaptive facades, Climate-adaptive buildingsAbstract
With growing concerns about the impact of the built environment, there is a growing tendency to incorporate adaptive skin technologies in buildings to effectively reduce their energy consumption. The rise of smart materials, coupled with the development of digital technologies and the feasibility of mass customization methods, has led to a growing interest in utilizing these non-traditional building systems. Smart materials have diverse potential applications in adaptive facades due to their properties, mostly realized through automated systems in adaptive facades that utilize sensors and actuators to intelligently adjust the building skin by monitoring and responding to external weather changes in real time. Based on analyzing the research literature on smart materials in recent years, this paper focuses on a series of practical applications of “climate-adaptive architecture” in buildings and cities from the aspects of the characteristics, development, classification, and application of smart materials in adaptive facades. Combined with the current problems in the application of smart materials, it explores the effective application of smart materials in adaptive facade to promote the sustainable and healthy development of urban environment.
