Over the past decade, China has transitioned from a period of rapid urbanization to an era focused on enhancing existing urban environments. As a result, the research on the urban renewal as well as urban spatial vitality has become the important focus of urban studies. Simultaneously, the widespread application of spatio-temporal big data in urban research made a shift from predominantly qualitative descriptive studies to primarily quantitative data-driven research. Big data technology has made previously difficult-to-measure research subjects more accessible. Combining these two significant development trends, utilizing big data to study urban spatial vitality holds great importance for national spatial planning, urban health assessments, and urban renewal. This paper selects the main data sources and methods used in typical studies of urban spatial vitality over the past decade, systematically reviews the evolution stages of big data-based urban spatial vitality research, summarizes the types of data and methods, and synthesizes related studies both domestically and internationally. Finally, it proposes three major development trends for future research.
