Abstract

With the technological advancements in areas of Indonesia, especially urban cities of Java, the people in rural communities are starting to experience the effects of urban culture from factors such as social life, working environments, and rapid dissemination of information via the internet. This affects how the people in rural vernacular areas start to incorporate innovations and technologies from other regions, especially urban regions, into their day-to-day life. This change can be seen from the implementation of new materials and construction techniques that they applied in their houses. In Sentol Hamlet, Alang-alang Village, Madura, the implementation of imported material has become quite common for the residents. But this raises a question on the implementation’s effect on the user's life. This paper assesses the architectural change and understands the possibility of this change having a pattern through the ages and trends based on information gathered through documentation and interviews with the residents who live in Taneyan Lanjhang House complexes. This paper finds that the Suramadu bridge has given Bangkalan’s economical advancements, increased access, while fostering cultural integration with the urban landscape of Surabaya. this all connects to the architectural changes and material shifts of the Taneyan Lanjhang that now are applying imported materials that are considered by the users to be more reflective of their social-economical improvements.
