JWACA2024-003: The essence of architectural technology
Keywords:
Retractable roofs, Sports architecture, Mechanical systemsAbstract
This paper examineed the technical and functional evolution of retractable roof structures in sports architecture, tracing their development from early membrane-based designs to modern rigid systems. Case studies from China (e.g., Nantong Stadium) and global examples illustrated engineering challenges, safety considerations, and cost-effectiveness. The study emphasized integrating mechanical, structural, and environmental technologies to achieve adaptable, energy-efficient spaces while balancing aesthetics and functionality. Future applications in swimming pools and mixed-use facilities were also discussed.
