Abstract

The continuous advancement of urbanization has replaced many natural surfaces with artificial surfaces, which has led to the more diversified urban structure. It plays an increasingly important role in the change of land surface temperature (LST). The impact of land use/land cover on LST have been extensively studied, but the investigation from the perspective of areas surrounding elementary schools was less concerned. And the deterioration of urban climate is more harmful to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. This study took the area within the Hangzhou Ring Expressway as the research area. Urban structure was identified through local climate zones (LCZs) based on remote sensing, and random forest regression models were used to quantify the impact of LCZs on LST around elementary schools at three different study scales. The results indicated that the land use intensity around elementary schools was higher, and average LST around elementary schools was higher than the regional average LST. In addition, the buffer zone with radius of 1000 m centered on the elementary school was considered as the optimal spatial scale, and the LST around elementary schools was closely related to the LCZs. These findings could serve as references for urban planners to design environment around the elementary school.
