In Japan, the number of vacant detached houses that have been built consistently since the end of World War II is increasing, while there is a growing shortage of welfare facilities to support the elderly and childcare. This study was conducted by means of a questionnaire survey and interview surveys in areas of Japan where the aging of the population is particularly high, even as the birthrate declines and the population ages at an accelerating rate.
The purpose was to clarify how the reality of suburbs has changed in the 50 years since development and how the demands for urban environment and urban functions have changed accordingly. As a result, it was found that differences in awareness clearly appeared in response to changes in urban structure and urban functions, but the differences were more apparent in the questions related to daily life. Significant differences were also found depending on the years of residence.
These findings will be important information for the future development of a community coexisting with the local community. Future research and comparison with another suburban detached housing is needed.
