Abstract

Due to the limitation of the backward construction technologies and the responding to the safe needs of the local villagers for the dangerous environment decades or hundred years ago, the opening areas are very small on the facades of the traditional Qiang rammed earth dwellings. So it is very dark even in daytime, humid and poor ventilation as well. Hence, in this article the devices integrated with daylight and ventilation functions have been proposed to improve the indoor environment in the dwellings. The devices made mainly of wooden boards coating with high reflective films are long square tubes and can be installed from the ceilings to the roof, with little change of the special features of the dwellings. After simulations and calculations, the devices had been proved available to light the rooms with mean daylight factor of more than 3% in the most time of daytime. Meanwhile, the hot pressing ventilation would provide enough fresh air and take away a lot of moisture. Obviously, the indoor environment would be more comfortable for the villagers.
