Abstract

With the fast urbanization process in China, many cities are facing the problem of losing territorial features.
How to adjust to rational development according to local conditions and protect historic landscape has become an
urgent issue.
The authors insist on that regional development is closely related to local culture. Thus we analyze historic
landscape characteristics with cultural ecology. It’s a study about the relationship between culture and
environment. This paper takes Xi’an Drum-Tower Muslim District as an example, combining with the concept of
cultural ecology, to interpret historic landscape characteristics in a western city of China, which is one of the most
important cities along the Silk Road.
The Drum-Tower Muslim District represents the typical residential houses of North-Western China with
Islamic characteristics. However, due to social development and lack of maintenance, many of their traditional
houses decayed. The paper analyzes historic landscape characteristics from the following aspects:
·The concept of cultural ecology
·The composition of historic landscape in the Drum-Tower Muslim District
·The factors which influence the direction of historic landscape development
Interpreting historic landscape with cultural ecology is helpful to and conductive to landscape construction in
accordance with local condition in the process of historic landscape conservation.
