IFC data of MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) systems can be exported easily by BIM software, and many case studies on building energy simulation and facility management have been carried out by using the IFC files directly. In this article, the application of IFC-property set data in duct design is proposed. According to the instant of a ventilation system and the IFC data exported by BIM software, the structure of IFC data for duct elements is illustrated, as well as the user defined IFC-property set attributes, such as the pressure loss, length and size of duct elements. Then the process of duct design is proposed by using these IFC-property data. The main duct is determined by comparing the total pressure loss and length of each duct path. Finally, the total pressure loss of the ventilation system is calculated, and the results are also compared by using the loss coefficients from the duct fitting database of ASHRAE. In addition, it is pointed out that the specification of the function based user defined IFC-property set is necessary for duct design.
