In this study, pathogen particle distribution according to different air handling systems was analyzed through
numerical analysis for outpatient clinic at general hospitals where there are possibilities of secondary airborne
infections among healthcare professionals and patients who visit the hospital for treatment. Air handling systems
of 10 patient departments at general hospitals in Korea were investigated, and the patient department at Hospital A
that uses recirculation, CAV, and manual control methods, which are considered most common, was finally
selected as the subject area. The basic conditions set for the simulation included room temperature, air volume,
particle settings, numerical analysis time, pathogen detection location, and outdoor air intake rates (0% for
recirculation, 30% for conventional forced-air system, and 100% dedicated outdoor air systems). Subsequently,
analysis points within the subject area were determined to deduce the pathogen concentration levels for three air
intake rates in each area, and it was discovered that the air intake rate affects the changes in indoor air flow and
pathogen particle movement can be controlled by adjusting differential pressure and air volume.
