Abstract

This article examines urban space through three cultural dimensions: materiality, sociality, and spirituality. It traces the evolution of cities from political centers to production spaces, emphasizing the 2010 global urbanization milestone when 50% of world population became urban dwellers. The discussion highlights how contemporary cities must transcend mere economic functionality to address human needs for security, social inclusivity, and cultural identity. Key concepts include "urban vitality", the transformation from "form follows function" to "function follows space," and the preservation of historical memory in urban renewal. The article critiques standardized, top-down planning approaches and advocates for diverse, bottom-up urban spaces that accommodate different lifestyles and cultural backgrounds.
