Recently, the importance of evacuation guidance has been emphasized due to the diversification, complexity, and large space of architectural space. In such architectural spaces, the most active means of inducing evacuation can be said to be exit lights. In Korea, exit lights are classified into evacuation exits, passageways (corridors, living rooms, stairs), and auditorium exit lights, and are installed according to regulations depending on the installation location. However, research on the colors and designs of evacuation guidance lights in Korea is somewhat lacking. Therefore, in this study, the recognition characteristics of evacuation lights were analyzed through experiments using the sign colors and designs of evacuation lights. For the sign colors, the recognition level of guidance lights was measured at different distances depending on the installation location, targeting 7 colors in the visible light range. In addition, the guidance performance of the design was analyzed for recognition characteristics according to letters and symbols. As a result, the recognizable colors of the exit light's display surface appeared in the order of red, blue, and green, which means that green used in Korea may not be the most appropriate color. In addition, the perception of evacuation guidance lights was different depending on the lighting condition (general environment) and darkness condition (emergency), and the perception of red color was higher when it was dark. In terms of the design of the guidance light, the symbol showed superior recognition. It is expected that this study will be used as basic data for the effective installation of evacuation guidance facilities and improvement of awareness of guidance.
