jaue2016122: The Current Condition and Development of the Disaster and Safety Management Institute of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security

Abstract

As the Korean society structure grew in size and became diversified, the Korean government has conducted R&D for national safety management technology necessary for effective prevention, preparation, response, and restoration in the process of protecting national lives and properties from various types of disasters. As various disasters and accidents such as the large-scale tragedy of Sewol Ferry occurred, the Ministry of Public Safety and Security was newly established. An issue has been raised, however, about its effectiveness as various types of similar organizations under the National Emergency Management Agency have yet to be unified and harmonized. To address this problem, the newly founded Ministry of Public Safety and Security has integrated 4 research projects of different natures into the Disaster and Safety Management Institute. This study examines the current condition of the Disaster and Safety Management Institute that has been newly established and presents the direction for the development of the R&D project for disaster and safety management in Korea.
